QUICK FACTS FOR PSA MAKERS

(Read detailed Facts and FAQs about feline declawing)

Rescue Roundtable -"Why an Animal should not be Declawed," http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaEx-qe2wBw&mode=related&search

Declawing (or onychectomy) is an amputation of all or part of the last bone in a cat's toe. It is not merely the removal of the nail, as many people mistakenly think. Many veterinarians do not expressly tell their clients that declawing is an amputation.

Declawing by laser is not more humane than using a scalpel. Laser declawing is just as painful, if not more painful than using a scalpel blade, according to the two articles about laser declawing in the veterinary literature. Declawing by laser is amputation by burning, producing, at times, fourth-degree burns in bone.

Declawing is one of the most painful, routinely performed surgeries in all of veterinary medicine, yet many veterinarians neglect to give any pain medications to cats suffering from the procedure.

Declawing does not keep a cat in its home. A declawed cat may lose its home, because of behavior problems that may develop after declawing.

Declawed cats may avoid the litterbox, because it hurts their injured paws to dig in the sand.

Declawed cats are more likely to bite, because they have been robbed of their primary defense, their claws.

Declawing a cat is not a compelling health or safety concern for an immunocompromised person, an elderly person, a pregnant woman or a child. Indeed, declawed cats often bite more, so declawing makes them more dangerous to these people.

The danger of cats living with HIV/AIDS patients relates to exposure to a parasite, Toxoplasmosis, some cats may have. This parasite is found in the litterbox.

Considering all factors in aggregate, statistically, a declawed cat is more likely to be killed in the pound, because it was declawed.

Declawing is a profitable veterinary procedure, netting some veterinarians as much as $75,000 per year. These veterinarians are amputating cat toes in an average of 11 minutes per cat.

Declawed cats are defenseless against other animals.

There are many humane ways of dealing with cat scratching, including the following:
