2002 News & Legislative Milestones
December 2—The Paw Project volunteers are the subjects of an article entitled "Paw Project Lends a Hand to Big Cats: Workers Undo Damage Done by Declawing," appearing in the "Los Angeles Daily News" newspaper and its sister publication, "The Pasadena Star-News." The article tells the story of the paw repair surgery performed on Aspen, the Canadian lynx.
October 29—Dr. Jennifer Conrad and Professor Taimie Bryant spoke to the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund at UCLA School of Law in the Bohnett Animal Law Speaker Series. The topic of the evening's discussion was "The Paw Project: The Legal Future of Non-Curative Surgeries."
October 18 and 19—Dr. Jennifer Conrad was interviewed on Hal Abram's "Caring for Creatures" syndicated radio show.
October 7—Dr. Jennifer Conrad delivered her scientific paper, "DELETERIOUS EFFECTS OF ONYCHECTOMY (DECLAWING) AND REPARATIVE SURGICAL TECHNIQUES IN EXOTIC FELIDS: A PRELIMINARY REPORT," held at the 2002 American Association of Zoo Veterinarians, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It was the first report in the veterinary medicine literature to address the treatment of complications associated with declawing in big cats.
October 6—Dr. Jennifer Conrad and The Paw Project are featured in an article, "Big Cats Are Her Cause" in the Los Angeles newspaper "Daily News."
September 19— Dr. Jennifer Conrad and The Paw Project are featured in an article in the "Palisadian-Post" newspaper (Pacific Palisades, CA).
September 17— Dr. Jennifer Conrad was interviewed on "The Karen Grant Show," radio 540 AM/1240 AM, Monterey, California.
July 19— Dr. Jennifer Conrad discusses The Paw Project on Dr. Larry Lachman's "The Family Animal" radio show, KAZU 90.3 FM, Pacific Grove, California.
2002 Events, Highlights & Milestones
November 27— The Paw Project has an anti-declawing billboard placed in West Los Angeles. The billboard, on the corner of Barrington Ave and Mississippi (one block north of Olympic), was donated by one of the Paw Project's most generous donors, Regency Outdoor Advertising. World renowned nature photographer Thomas Mangelsen, Images of Nature, kindly allowed The Paw Project to use his stunning photograph, "Light in the Forest," for the billboard.
November 13—Drs. Conrad, Santinelli, and Wendelburg repair the front paws of an eight-year-old female cougar, Kiowa.
October 30—Drs. Jennifer Conrad and Kirk Wendelburg repair the front paws of Aspen, a five-year-old male Canadian lynx that had been rescued as a cub from a fur farm.
September 21—THE CAUSE FOR PAWS, an awareness-raising event was held at the Eco Station, 10101 W. Jefferson Blvd., Culver City, CA.
August 28—Drs. Conrad and Wendelburg repair the front paws of a five-year-old male bobcat, Bobby. At 21 pounds, Bobby is the smallest animal to have paw repair surgery.
July 17 Shiloh, a male cougar, has his front paws repaired by Drs. Conrad and Wendelburg.
June 28— Drs. Conrad and Wendelburg repair the rear paws of a twelve-year-old female cougar, Shoshone. She had her front paws fixed in January 2001.
May 24— Drs. Jennifer Conrad and Kirk Wendelburg repair the rear paws of Naala, an eight-year-old lioness. Her front paws had been repaired last summer.
